The moment you slide out the extendable stylus for the i-STATION i2 from its snugly fitting slot on the side of the player you know its not just another portable media player. The unit itself is slim silver and smooth but the vibrant vivid TFT screen featuring 262 thousand colours seems massive especially considering the player's small frame. The 3D rotating icon driven menu system which is fully controlled via the i2's touch sensitive screen is a dream to use. Forget the navigational problems that have plagued PMP units from other manufacturers the i-STATION i2 is intuitive and ergonomic. The i-STATION i2 supports a massive range of audio and video codecs including MP3 WMA OGG AC3 AAC DivX Xvid MPEG1 MPEG2 MPEG4 ASF WMV and JPEG. The i2 supports virtually all video formats (approximately 90% of those available on the Internet) - an amazing statistic. The impressive sound output of 70mW means that audio is crisp and powerful. Even the player's loudspeaker manages to produce a good quality of sound somehow managing to avoid the depthless sound of similar sized speakers on other devices. The 20GB hard drive allows you to store over 25 full length movies or 4500 MP3 music files; downloading is as simple as copy and paste. The i2 has plenty of juice in it too; it can playback movies for a full 7 hours or music for 15 hours; impressive for a device with such a large screen. The fact that the rechargeable battery is detachable is another bonus allowing you to easily clip on an additional battery if you run out of charge (available seperately). The i2 is packed with features including voice recording direct encoding JPEG slide show display a calculator dictionary and even a text viewer. The only feature the i2 lacks is direct video encoding via the player itself but downloading from a PC is so quick and easy that you really don't miss this function. The i2 is easily connected to a TV with high quality S-Video and CVBS output connections (see 'Images' section) and even an infrared remote controller is included. Bored of watching movies or playing music files? The i2 even features several built in games (check out the 'Images' section for more details). New for the i-STATION i2 the player now supports 5.1 Channel DTS output via SPDIF allowing you to output digital surround sound from your i2. The i2 now also supports a cartoon viewer and an increased range of built in games. Want to download data and digital images from another USB device like a digital camera? The i-STATION i2 now supports USB Host; allowing you to connect compatible devices for data exchange onto the i2's massive hard drive.
